What is Molnupiravir?
Molnupiravir is an oral, antiviral medication that stops the replication of certain RNA viruses. It is used to treat COVID-19 in those infected.
What Do Studies Say?
In a very recent study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, this study aimed to better understand how effective Molnupiravir was at treating COVID-19 patients at home. A total of, 1433 participants underwent randomization; 716 were assigned to receive Molnupiravir and 717 to receive a placebo.
This study found that Molnupiravir was successful in reducing the risk of hospitalization for any cause or death through day 29. Of the 385 participants, only 28 [7.3%] had a serious infection, this is better than with compared to the results of the placebo which had serious cases in 53 of 377 analysed [14.1%].
What was Interesting About This Study?
Only patients not vaccinated against Covid-19 were eligible for the trial, a choice made both to focus on those most likely to need antiviral treatment and to facilitate more rapid evaluation of the therapeutic efficacy of Molnupiravir.
Was This Study Trustworthy?
This study was randomized, which means the participants were chosen at random. This means that the study team couldn’t just choose particular people
There was a placebo group which they could compare their results to. A placebo group means that a group of children who were randomly selected to get a fake vaccine that does not contain the vaccine.
A placebo group helps to show what the effect of the vaccine actually is when compared with someone who didn’t actually get the medicine, although they thought they did.
