Doctor's Referral for Blood Tests? Not Needed | Epicentre

Do You Need a Doctor's Referral for Blood Tests? No.

In South Africa, you can walk into a private lab and request blood tests without a GP referral, appointment, or prescription. This is called self-request pathology. Here is how it works, when you might still want a doctor involved, and what it costs.

The Old Way vs Self-Request

Traditional Pathway

1. Book GP appointment

2. Pay consultation fee (R400 – R800)

3. GP writes a referral script

4. Visit pathology lab separately

5. Return to GP for results

6. Pay second consultation fee

Two appointments. Two fees. Multiple days.

vs

Self-Request at Epicentre

1. Walk into any branch

2. Choose your test

3. Nurse collects your sample

4. Results via email (2 – 7 days)

One visit. 15 minutes. No GP needed.

What Is Self-Request Pathology?

Self-request pathology (also called direct-access testing) allows you to order your own lab tests without a healthcare provider's intervention. You walk into a lab, tell reception which test you want, a nurse collects your sample, and the results are emailed directly to you.

This works well if you want to monitor a chronic condition independently (diabetes, cholesterol, thyroid), need sexual health screening with privacy, are proactive about preventative health, or need tests for travel or employment.

When You Might Still Want a Doctor

Walk-in testing covers most situations, but there are three scenarios where Epicentre's partner doctors add value:

Medical aid reimbursement. Most medical aids require a doctor's referral with an ICD-10 diagnosis code to process a claim. If you want your tests covered by your scheme, Epicentre's partner doctors can provide this referral after reviewing your results. You do not need a separate GP visit beforehand.

Chronic condition registration. Conditions like HIV, diabetes, hypertension and thyroid disease qualify for Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMB): your medical aid must cover them by law once a doctor registers the condition. Epicentre's partners can review your results and handle the registration so your future medication and monitoring are covered.

Abnormal results requiring treatment. A lab report cannot prescribe medication. If your cholesterol is high, your thyroid is underactive, or you test positive for an STI, Epicentre's Test and Treat programme connects you to a doctor via WhatsApp, Zoom or in person. You are not left alone with a PDF.

Can I use my medical aid without a referral?
