    Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about blood testing at Epicentre

Do I need a doctor's referral to get a blood test?
No referral is required. Epicentre is a private pathology laboratory offering direct-access testing. You can walk into any of our three branches (Durban, Cape Town, or Johannesburg) or order a home test kit without a prescription or doctor's letter. This makes it easy to get proactive about your health or investigate symptoms without waiting for a GP appointment.
How much do blood tests cost at Epicentre?
Our packages range from R95 to R10,696 for full panels. All prices shown are cash/practice rates inclusive of 15% VAT. Medical aid patients are billed at medical aid rates (approximately 20% higher). We accept all major medical aids and can submit claims on your behalf. View our full package pricing for details.
How long do blood test results take?
Most blood test results are delivered within 2 – 5 working days. PCR molecular tests (STIs, gut health) typically take 5 – 7 working days. Expedited options are available for both due to the complexity of the analysis. Express STI screening is available with results in 24–72 hours. You'll receive a notification when your secure digital report is ready.
Will my blood test appear on medical aid records?
Only if you choose to claim. If you pay directly by card or cash, the transaction is private and will not appear on your medical aid records. Many patients choose this option for sensitive tests like STI screening. If you do want to claim, we can submit to your medical aid on your behalf.
What is the difference between PCR and rapid tests?
PCR tests detect the actual genetic material (DNA/RNA) of pathogens, while rapid tests detect antibodies. Antibodies can take 2–6 weeks to develop after infection, meaning rapid tests may miss recent infections. Epicentre uses PCR molecular testing for STIs and gut health, providing earlier detection and higher accuracy than antibody-based rapid tests.
Do I need to fast before my blood test?
Some tests require fasting, others don't. Tests measuring glucose, insulin, lipids (cholesterol), and metabolic markers require a 10–12 hour fast (water is fine). Hormone tests, thyroid panels, and most STI tests do not require fasting. We'll advise you when you book or order your test.
Where are your walk-in lab branches located?
We have three branches across South Africa:
    Hillcrest, Durban: 2 Knelsby Ave, Hillcrest. 031 880 2150
Observatory, Cape Town: 24 Lower Main Road. 021 201 1658
    Parktown North, Johannesburg: 02 7th Avenue. 082 065 2172
All branches are open Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 16:00. Walk-ins welcome or book online.
Do you offer home test kits?
Yes, we ship home test kits nationwide. Available for STI testing, gut health, and select wellness panels. Kits include everything you need for sample collection, clear instructions, and prepaid return packaging. Results are delivered to your secure portal just like walk-in tests. Browse home kits.
