What Causes Constant Tiredness?

Fatigue is a symptom, not a diagnosis. These six causes are behind most unexplained tiredness, and every one is simple to check with a blood test.

30%of SA women

Low iron

Low iron means less oxygen reaching your cells. The most common cause in women.

Thyroid trouble

A slow thyroid slows your metabolism and saps energy, often quietly for years.

40%of South Africans

Low vitamin D

Yes, even here. Low vitamin D drags down energy, mood and immunity.

Commonin plant-based diets

Low vitamin B12

Essential for nerves and healthy red blood cells. Low levels cause fatigue and brain fog.

Oftenmissed

Blood sugar swings

Unsteady blood sugar can cause energy crashes and afternoon slumps.

Stressand recovery

The stress response

The body's stress response affects recovery, sleep quality and daytime energy.

80%
of fatigue has a treatable cause. The hard part is knowing which one. A blood test takes the guesswork out in about 15 minutes.

Not sure where to start? If you are new to testing, start with the Iron and Anaemia Package plus the Thyroid Package. Together, these cover the two most common causes of fatigue (roughly 70% of cases). If those come back normal, move to a comprehensive panel. Or WhatsApp us and describe your symptoms.

Fasting note: Basic panels (iron, thyroid, vitamins) do not require fasting. Comprehensive panels that include glucose, insulin or lipids require 8 to 10 hours fasting. Water and black coffee are fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

What blood tests should I get if I am always tired?
Start with iron studies (including ferritin), thyroid function (TSH, Free T4, Free T3), vitamin D and vitamin B12. These cover the most common treatable causes. If those are normal, consider a comprehensive panel including cortisol, blood sugar markers (HbA1c) and inflammation markers (CRP).
Do I need to fast?
Basic panels (iron, thyroid, vitamins): no fasting required. Comprehensive panels that include glucose, insulin or lipids: fast 8 to 10 hours. Water and black coffee are fine.
How long do results take?
2 to 5 working days for most panels. Comprehensive panels may take 5 to 7 days. Results via email: plain-language ODx report plus standard lab report for your doctor.
What if my results are abnormal?
Most fatigue causes are treatable once identified. Iron deficiency, vitamin D deficiency and thyroid dysfunction all respond well to treatment. Share results with your own doctor, or Epicentre can connect you with partner physicians. Test and Treat guide.
Is ferritin the same as iron?
Serum iron measures iron in your blood right now. Ferritin measures your iron stores. You can have normal serum iron but low ferritin, meaning your reserves are depleted. Both should be tested together.
Can I test for chronic fatigue syndrome?
There is no single test for CFS/ME. However, comprehensive blood work rules out other causes (thyroid, iron, vitamin deficiencies, blood sugar problems, inflammation) which is the first step in any CFS investigation.
