Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
This is usually the first test your provider will do to check for thyroid hormone imbalance. Most of the time, thyroid hormone deficiency (hypothyroidism) is associated with an elevated TSH level, while thyroid hormone excess (hyperthyroidism) is associated with a low TSH level. The thyroid makes hormones that regulate the way the body uses energy. It also plays an important role in regulating a person’s weight, body temperature, muscle strength, and even their mood.
The thyroid produces a hormone called thyroxine, which is known as T4. This hormone plays a role in several of the body’s functions, including growth and metabolism. A doctor may order a T4 test if a thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) test has come back with abnormal results. A T4 test will help a doctor determine what type of problem is affecting the thyroid.
The thyroid produces a hormone called triiodothyronine, known as T3. It also produces a hormone called thyroxine, known as T4. Together, these hormones regulate the body’s temperature, metabolism, and heart rate. By measuring the T3 in the blood, a doctor may be able to determine if there is a thyroid problem.
Thyroid Antibodies (Thyroid Ab) Test
This test measures the level of thyroid antibodies in your blood. There are different types of thyroid antibodies. Some antibodies destroy thyroid tissue. Others cause the thyroid to make too much of certain thyroid hormones. A thyroid antibodies test usually measures one or more of the following types of antibodies: Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO), Thyroglobulin antibodies (Tg), & thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) receptor.
