Why Medical Aid Creates a Paper Trail
The moment you hand over your medical aid card at a doctor's room or a pathology lab, you create a digital footprint that cannot be erased. For dependants on a parent's policy, spouses on a shared plan, or anyone who needs discretion, this footprint is the biggest barrier to getting tested.
The ICD-10 Code
Every medical claim requires a diagnostic code. For an STI test, the code (e.g. Z11.3) tells the medical scheme exactly what the visit was for.
The Main Member Statement
At the end of the month, the person who pays the bill receives a statement showing the date, the lab's name and the cost.
The SMS Notification
Many schemes send an immediate SMS to the main member when funds are deducted.
The reality: you cannot hide a test on a shared medical aid policy. If you use the card, the main member will know. To test privately, you need to bypass the insurance system entirely.
Three Layers of Anonymity
Use a Pseudonym
Most labs demand a South African ID or passport to open a file. Epicentre does not.
You may use any name you choose when you check in. Your sample is tracked by a unique barcode, not by your name. As long as you have the barcode, the name attached to it is irrelevant.
The only requirement: a valid email address. This is the sole link between you and your result. The PDF report is sent to this email and nowhere else.
Pay Without a Trace
Paying by personal bank card can leave a trail on your bank statement (the merchant name "Epicentre" may appear). Two options avoid this:
Cash. Accepted at all branches. No digital record whatsoever.
Prepaid debit card. Buy a prepaid Visa or Mastercard at Checkers, Pick n Pay or Dis-Chem. Load it with cash at the store. Use it at our card machines. It works like a bank card but is not linked to your identity.
Skip the Doctor Entirely
The traditional pathway creates three files: one at your GP, one at the pathology lab, and one at your medical scheme. Epicentre eliminates all three.
The old way: visit GP (file created) → get a script → visit lab (file created) → claim submitted (scheme record created).
At Epicentre: walk in → request the test → sample collected → result to your email. No doctor's referral. No doctor's file. No scheme record.
How to Execute This: Step by Step
Prepare payment
Draw cash from an ATM, or buy a prepaid debit card at any supermarket or pharmacy.
Create a private email
If you share an email with a partner or family member, create a free Gmail or Outlook account for your results.
Walk into any Epicentre branch
Hillcrest (Durban), Observatory (Cape Town), or Parktown North (Johannesburg). No appointment needed. Mon – Fri, 08:30 – 16:00.
Check in anonymously
Tell reception: "I would like to test anonymously." Give your chosen name and your private email address. That is all they need.
Get tested
A nurse collects your sample (blood draw or self-collected swab in a private room). The entire visit takes about 15 minutes.
Receive results
Your secure PDF report arrives via email in 2 – 7 working days. No SMS to your phone. No letter to your house. No claim to your medical aid.
