What's tested

What does the panel measure?

Eight markers built around the demands of training: how you fuel and recover, your blood and thyroid, muscle stress and the nutrients hard training depletes. All from one morning, fasted blood draw.

Why fasted and morning: fasting glucose and your lipogram read most accurately after an overnight fast, so a morning appointment gives the truest picture of how you fuel and recover.

Blood count

Full Blood Count (FBC). A full blood count, including the red cells that carry oxygen to working muscles.

Muscle and heart enzyme

CK-MB. An enzyme that reflects muscle stress and recovery, and can rise after very hard training. It is also a cardiac marker, so it is read in context, not as a heart-attack test.

Fuel and recovery

Fasting Glucose, Lipogram. Your blood sugar and full cholesterol panel, which shape how you fuel training and recover.

Thyroid

TSH. A thyroid check, since thyroid function affects energy, metabolism and recovery.

Liver

Liver Function Tests (LFT). A full set of liver enzymes and proteins, which can shift with a heavy training load.

Bone and recovery nutrients

Calcium, Vitamin D. Calcium and vitamin D, important for bone strength, muscle function and recovery.

What you get back

Your results come with an ODx report

With this panel you also receive an ODx Functional Health Report, which reads your results against optimal ranges, not just disease ranges, so you can spot imbalances early and track them over time. On orders over R1,500 you also get a free one-on-one session with an ODx specialist to talk through your results.

How it works

Three steps, no GP needed

1

Book a morning slot

Reserve a morning time at your branch, or walk in. No doctor's referral. Come fasted.

2

Quick blood draw

A nurse takes a small sample, just a few minutes. A morning, fasted sample gives the clearest read.

3

Results in 2 to 5 days

A colour-coded report by marker, with a free certificate you can share with your doctor.

When this helps

Who is this for?

Most useful if you train seriously and want to see how your body is coping with the load.

Training hard

You train seriously and want to see how your body is coping with the load.

Stalled progress

You are training and eating well but not recovering or improving as expected.

Persistent fatigue

You feel run down or flat despite rest, and want a fuller picture.

A seasonal baseline

You want a baseline at the start of a block or season to track over time.

Returning from a break

You are building back up and want to check the basics first.

Performance health

You simply want the core markers that underpin training and recovery.

The staff at reception as well as the nurses are friendly and professional. I've also always received results timeously. I would give 10 stars if I could.

What this does not do

This is a screen of the basics behind performance. It is a starting point for a conversation with a clinician, not a diagnosis and not an emergency test.

  • This is not a cardiac emergency test. CK-MB is read in context; chest pain or other cardiac symptoms need urgent care, not this panel.
  • It does not diagnose any condition on its own; unusual results are followed up with a doctor.
  • Marker levels can be affected by recent hard training, so time your test and read results with that in mind.
  • Results are meant to inform a discussion with a doctor, sports physician or dietitian.
Common questions

Quick answers

Full Blood Count (FBC), Fasting Glucose, Lipogram, CK-MB, Calcium, Vitamin D, TSH and Liver Function Tests (LFT). The panel is R1,991, with Payflex available at about R498 a month over four payments.
Yes. The panel includes fasting glucose and a lipogram, so come in the morning after an overnight fast. Water is fine, and keep to your usual medicines unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Heavy training in the day or two before can raise some markers, especially muscle enzymes. For a baseline, an easier day or a rest day beforehand gives a cleaner read.
No. Book or walk in to any branch in Cape Town, Durban or Johannesburg without a doctor's referral.
Typically within 2 to 5 working days, with a free results certificate you can share with your doctor.
At our three walk-in labs: Observatory in Cape Town, Hillcrest in Durban and Parktown North in Johannesburg, Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 16:00.
