What's tested

What does the panel measure?

Five blood markers that can rise when heart or other muscle tissue is under strain or has been injured. They are read by a doctor in the context of your symptoms and history.

Read these with a doctor: these markers reflect recent damage rather than long-term heart-disease risk, so they mean most when a clinician interprets them alongside your symptoms.

Cardiac damage markers

Troponin I, CK-MB, Myoglobin. Markers that can rise when heart muscle has been recently injured or strained.

General tissue markers

LDH, AST. Broader markers that can rise with damage to heart, muscle or liver tissue.

The staff at reception as well as the nurses are friendly and professional. I've also always received results timeously. I would give 10 stars if I could.

What this does not do

These are damage markers, not a screen for heart-disease risk, and they are never a substitute for emergency care.

  • If you have chest pain, pressure, breathlessness, sweating, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back, call emergency services immediately on 10177 or 112. Do not wait for or rely on this test.
  • These markers reflect recent tissue damage; a normal result does not rule out heart disease, blocked arteries or future risk.
  • They are not a screening tool for long-term cardiovascular risk; for that, ask about the Cardio Plus Screen.
  • Results must be interpreted by a doctor alongside your symptoms, history and an ECG where needed.
  • Several markers also rise with muscle or liver strain, so they are not specific to the heart on their own.
Common questions

Quick answers

Five markers: Troponin I, CK-MB, Myoglobin, LDH and AST. It is R1,082, with results in 2 to 5 working days.
No. If you have chest pain, breathlessness or other warning signs, call emergency services now on 10177 or 112. This test is not for emergencies and you should never wait for results.
Not necessarily. These markers reflect recent damage, not long-term risk. A normal result does not rule out heart disease, and these tests should be read by a doctor.
No. For long-term cardiovascular risk, the Cardio Plus Screen is more suitable. This panel measures damage markers, best used with a doctor.
Typically 2 to 5 working days, with a report you can share with your doctor.
