What's tested

What does the lipogram measure?

A full cholesterol breakdown in one test, the four readings together that show your heart-risk picture. From one quick blood draw.

Four numbers, one picture: a lipogram reports total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides together, which is how cholesterol-related risk is read. Fasting is not required, though some doctors prefer a fasting sample for triglycerides.

Total Cholesterol

Total Cholesterol. The overall amount of cholesterol in your blood.

HDL Cholesterol

HDL. The protective cholesterol that helps clear the rest from your blood.

LDL Cholesterol

LDL. The cholesterol most linked to clogged arteries and heart risk.

Triglycerides

Triglycerides. A blood fat tied to diet, weight and metabolic health.

The staff at reception as well as the nurses are friendly and professional. I've also always received results timeously. I would give 10 stars if I could.

What this does not do

This is a screen of your cholesterol. It is a starting point for a conversation, not a full assessment of heart risk on its own.

  • A single result is a snapshot; trends over time tell you more.
  • Heart risk also depends on blood pressure, family history, lifestyle and other factors your doctor weighs up.
  • Unusual results are followed up with your doctor, who reads them in context.
  • Results are meant to inform a discussion with a registered practitioner.
Common questions

Quick answers

Total Cholesterol, HDL, LDL and Triglycerides. The panel is R324, with results in 2 to 5 working days.
Not usually. A lipogram can be taken without fasting. If your doctor specifically wants a fasting triglyceride result, come in the morning after an overnight fast, but it is not required.
No. Book or walk in to any branch in Cape Town, Durban or Johannesburg without a doctor's referral.
Typically within 2 to 5 working days, with a free results certificate you can share with your doctor.
If you want more than cholesterol, the Cardio-Plus Screen adds ultrasensitive CRP and homocysteine for a fuller cardiovascular picture.
At our three walk-in labs: Observatory in Cape Town, Hillcrest in Durban and Parktown North in Johannesburg, Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 16:00.
