Semen analysis, also known as a sperm count test, analyses the health and viability of a man’s sperm. A semen analysis is often recommended when couples are having trouble getting pregnant. The test will help a doctor determine if a man is infertile, as an analysis will help determine if low sperm count or sperm dysfunction is the reason behind infertility. Men who have had a vasectomy are also recommended to get a semen analysis to make sure no sperm are in their semen.
Additional Tests On Request
Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) Levels test
This test is used in men to measure the level of FSH found in your blood. Your doctor will order an FSH test to find the underlying cause of symptoms affecting the reproductive system, as it can shed more light on reduced total motile sperm count or low sperm density. This hormone works with luteinizing hormone to help ensure that the testicles are producing sufficient amounts of sperm and testosterone.
This test measures the level of luteinizing hormone (LH) in your blood. LH is made by your pituitary gland. In men, this test can help find the cause of infertility, help find the reason for a low sperm count, and help find the reason for a low sex drive.
This is a screening test that looks at the total level of the hormone testosterone in your blood. When levels of testosterone drop below what is considered normal, it may have a direct impact on fertility in men. It can cause problems with sperm production, as well as cause problems like erectile dysfunction and negatively impact a man’s sex drive.
The pituitary gland in the brain produces prolactin. Prolactin is usually measured when checking for pituitary tumours and/or assessing issues with fertility. Too much of this hormone can cause infertility in men. When high, prolactin can negatively impact testicle health, resulting in abnormal sperm or low testosterone levels.
This test measures the amount of estradiol (E2). Elevated estradiol levels are correlated with male infertility (Leavy et al., 2017). This test can help your doctor diagnose this issue and increase fertility. Plus, elevated levels of estradiol can be a symptom of diseases like the adrenal cortex, testis or medications affecting the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis (Leavy et al., 2017). So, this test can also be useful in identifying these diseases early.
When the thyroid is not functioning properly, this may interfere with fertility in men. In addition to fertility problems, when the thyroid is underactive, men might also experience weight gain, fatigue, muscle aches, and dry skin. If their thyroid is over-active, they might experience fatigue, palpitations, fast heart rate and weight loss.
