Our Typhoid Test Explained
What is ‘Typhoid’?
Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection that can spread throughout the body, affecting many organs. Without prompt treatment, it can cause serious complications and can be fatal.
What is a ‘Typhoid test’?
There are two kinds of Typhoid tests, Rapid and Lab tests.
What is the Typhoid test procedure?
Typhoid tests are blood tests. This means that when you do our Typhoid Lab test, we will take a small amount of blood to send through to the laboratory.
When you do a Typhoid Rapid Test, we will take a small amount of blood and put it in the test cassette. You will then wait 10 mins and get your result.
Who should get a Typhoid test?
Having a Lab Typhoid test is helpful if:
You have been possibly exposed to Typhoid
You are looking for extremely high accuracy results.
Your possible infection was recent.
You can afford to wait 24hrs for your results
You need an official laboratory certificate.
Get a Rapid Typhoid test if
You have possibly been exposed to typhoid
You need your results urgently.
You require a cheaper test.
You have possible symptoms.
What are Typhoid Fever’s Symptoms?
You’ll probably have a high fever (going as high as 39 to 40 °C) that lasts a long time. Some people also get a rash that looks flat, with rose-coloured (pink) spots. People also get symptoms like Weakness, stomach pain, a headache, diarrhoea or constipation, a Cough and a loss of appetite.
When will a Typhoid test pick up Typhoid?
The symptoms of typhoid fever usually develop 1 or 2 weeks after a person becomes infected with the Salmonella typhi bacteria.
This test performs best within a week of the start of symptoms.
When should you get a Typhoid test?
Here are some handy tips for timing your test just right:
At Epicentre, we have 2 collection times on Monday to Friday. Our first collection is at 11am and our second collection time is at 4pm.
During the weekend, we are closed.
If you are looking to get your result within the 24hr window or less you should come before our 11am sample collection as it will be processed at the lab sooner.
This is recommended for those getting a test done for an official purpose such as travelling or medical appointments
If you are looking to avoid any waiting times, we recommend avoiding peak times such as 8-9am or during our nurses’ lunch break from 11:45am to 12:30pm
A personal recommendation for those travelling is to come at 10am
How can a Typhoid test help you?
A Typhoid test can help you:
A typhoid test can give you certainty on your status and allow you to get the appropriate treatment if you test positive.
