The honest bottom line

Good for accessible, affordable first-line testing

We are a strong fit if you want to check the common causes of tiredness quickly and affordably, without a GP visit, with prices you can see up front and results written in plain language. For complex or long-standing fatigue, it works best paired with a doctor, and there is a pathway to one.

The short version: the pros are real, no doctor referral, claimable, published prices, fast walk-in access. The honest catch is that a self-ordered test is a starting point, not a full doctor-led workup. If your tiredness is simple and recent, that starting point is often all you need. If it is complex, use the result as the first step in a conversation with a clinician.

The pros

Where we work well

No doctor referral needed

You can walk into a branch and have your bloods drawn without a GP visit first. For something as common as checking iron or thyroid, that removes the slowest, most expensive step.

Claimable on medical aid

We accept all major South African medical aids and submit the claim for you. The prices shown are the cash rate; medical aid is billed at a slightly higher rate. If you would rather keep it private, paying cash means nothing appears on your medical aid statement.

Published, predictable prices

You can see the cost before you go. An iron and anaemia panel starts from R843, and the 13-marker ODx Vital wellness panel is R3,310, with student and pensioner discounts and Payflex instalments. No phoning around to find out what it costs.

Built for fast, walk-in access

The whole model is walk in, get tested, get results, rather than appointment-heavy back and forth. A registered nurse draws your blood, and results come back in 2 to 5 working days.

The concerns, addressed

The cons, weighed honestly

A few criticisms get raised about walk-in fatigue testing. Some are fair, some are out of date. Here they are, straight.

“Their menu is all infectious-disease and rapid testing. There is no fatigue panel.”

Out of date.

This was a fair read of the old general walk-in list, which led with COVID and routine tests. It missed what we are actually built around. Fatigue and energy sit at the heart of our functional-health approach: our ODx reports read your results against functional ranges, not just pathological cut-offs, and our packages were designed with causes of low energy in mind, among other things. So the testing is not an afterthought bolted onto an infectious-disease menu, it is part of the point.

That work is gathered on our fatigue and energy testing page, with defined panels: an iron and anaemia panel (ferritin, iron profile, vitamin B12, full blood count), a full thyroid panel, vitamin D and vitamin B12 checks, and broader wellness panels. The fatigue-relevant tests are spelled out, so you do not have to guess whether we run them.

“There is no doctor choosing the right tests for you.”

Fair, and worth taking seriously.

This is the real trade-off with any self-ordered test, and we will not pretend otherwise: no one is tailoring the panel to your full history. Two things soften it. There is clear guidance on where to start, the iron and thyroid panels together cover the majority of fatigue causes, and there is a test-chooser plus nurses on site to point you the right way. But if your tiredness is long-standing, complex, or tied to another condition, a clinician who knows your history adds real value. More on when that matters below.

“No one interprets the result, so it is hard to act on.”

Half right, and it undersells the report.

It is true the lab does not diagnose you. But you are not handed a bare row of numbers. Every result comes with a plain-language ODx report that explains what each marker means for you, alongside the standard lab report your own doctor can use. And the reading is not left entirely to you: we work with partner doctors who can review your results and act on them. So a borderline or abnormal value leads somewhere, rather than leaving you stuck.

“You cannot find out what a fatigue workup costs.”

Out of date.

Pricing is published, not hidden behind a phone call. The iron and anaemia panel starts from R843, the 13-marker ODx Vital panel is R3,310, and the dedicated fatigue page lists the panels with their tests so you can see what you are paying for before you commit.

“A traditional doctor-referred lab workup might suit me better.”

Sometimes true, and we will say so.

For some people, a doctor-led workup is the better route, especially if your fatigue has dragged on for months, comes with other symptoms, or sits alongside a known condition, where tailoring and interpreting the panel really pays off. Our strength is different: accessible, affordable first-line testing without the wait. The two are not mutually exclusive. You can test first and take the results to your doctor, or use the partner-doctor pathway to act on them. The point is to start, not to stall.

What you actually get

What an ODx report looks like

This is the heart of the point above. You are not handed a wall of numbers to puzzle over. Your results are read against optimal ranges, set next to your previous test, and explained in plain language, so you can see what is changing and what to do next.

// Functional Health Report Improving

Every result is read against its optimal range, not just the standard lab cut-off, and set next to your last test so you can see exactly what is changing.

The real trade-off

When a doctor-led workup makes more sense

Being honest about the limits is the point of this page. A walk-in panel is a great first step, but see a doctor to guide the testing if:

  • Your fatigue has lasted months, or is getting worse rather than better.
  • It comes with other symptoms, like weight loss, night sweats, breathlessness or a lasting cough.
  • You have a known condition that could be driving it, where the panel needs tailoring.

None of that rules us out. You can still test first for speed and cost, then take a clear, plain-language report to your doctor, or let our partner-doctor pathway act on it. Testing and good clinical care are not either-or.

If you want to start now

from R843 iron and anaemia panel

The sensible first step for most people is to check the two most common causes, iron and thyroid. Walk in, no doctor referral, plain-language results.

  • Iron and anaemia panel (from R843), including ferritin, your iron stores.
  • Thyroid panel as the natural next step if iron is normal.
  • Or one wellness panel: the 13-marker ODx Vital (R3,310) covers iron, thyroid, vitamins and more in one visit.
  • Results in 2 to 5 working days, with a plain-language report.

I would rather people had the honest version. A walk-in panel is a fast, affordable way to catch the common causes of tiredness, and most of the time that is exactly what is needed. When it is not, the result is still the right first step to take to a doctor. Either way, you are further ahead than guessing.

See a doctor promptly, not a walk-in test, if

Some tiredness needs medical attention first:

  • It comes with unexplained weight loss, night sweats, or a cough lasting more than two weeks.
  • You have breathlessness, chest pain, or a fast or irregular heartbeat.
  • The exhaustion is severe, sudden, or rapidly worsening.

Your results come with a plain-language ODx report that explains what each marker means, plus a standard lab report for your own doctor. We do not diagnose you ourselves, but we work with partner doctors who can review your results and act on them.
No doctor referral is needed. You can walk into a branch in Cape Town, Durban or Johannesburg, no appointment required, and a registered nurse draws your blood. Your own GP can also refer you if you prefer.
It depends on your situation. For a first check of the common causes, a walk-in panel is a fast, affordable starting point. If your fatigue is long-standing, severe, or comes with other symptoms, a doctor who knows your history should guide the workup. You can also test first and take the results to a doctor.
