What's tested

What does the panel measure?

Six routine pregnancy blood tests in one visit, without HIV screening, grouped so you and your doctor or midwife can look after both you and your baby. From one blood draw.

Free antenatal care exists too: routine pregnancy bloods are part of antenatal care available free at public clinics across South Africa. This is a private option with a quick turnaround. If you would also like HIV screening, the Antenatal Panel with HIV includes it.

Blood count and group

FBC, ABO Grouping and Rhesus Factor. A full blood count to check for anaemia, with your blood group and Rhesus type.

Rhesus antibody check

Coombs Test (Indirect). Looks for antibodies that can affect the baby, especially important if you are Rhesus negative.

Infection screens

Syphilis (RPR/VDRL), Hepatitis B. Screens for infections that can be passed to the baby, so they can be managed early.

Immunity check

Rubella IgG. Checks whether you are immune to rubella (German measles), which can harm a baby in early pregnancy.

The staff at reception as well as the nurses are friendly and professional. I've also always received results timeously. I would give 10 stars if I could.

What this does not do

These are routine screening tests. Your doctor or midwife reads them alongside your history and examination; they do not replace antenatal care.

  • HIV screening is a routine and recommended part of antenatal care; this panel leaves it out by choice. The Antenatal Panel with HIV includes it, and HIV testing is also free at public clinics.
  • A reactive syphilis screen is always confirmed with a further test before it is treated as a diagnosis, and it is very treatable in pregnancy.
  • Share all results with your doctor or midwife, who guides the next steps.
  • This panel covers the routine screens; your clinician may add others based on your history.
