What is HUTS?
HUTS or the Healthcare UTilisation and Seroprevalence Survey is a study that is returning to find out more about the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic in South Africa.
We are doing a questionnaire with invited participants and taking a small amount of blood to find out if they have had COVID in the past. Then as a thank-you, they get a R50 voucher!
The study is being conducted by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), Genesis Analytics and Epicentre.
Where Did HUTS 2 Happen?
The HUTS teams are visiting past participants:
✔ Mitchell’s Plain in the Western Cape
✔ & Edendale in Kwazulu-Natal
What are we hoping to achieve?
COVID-19 has affected the lives of all South Africans. There is still a lot to learn about COVID-19 and how it has affected communities. HUTS-2 aims to find out if there are community members who may have had COVID-19 but did not feel sick or could not get to health services if they did get sick. This information is important to guide in planning and decision-making for preventing future waves of the pandemic in South Africa, as well as to help ensure that health facilities are available to those who need it.
Who can sign up for HUTS?
Everyone who participated in the first HUTS survey can participate in the HUTS-2. We may also be visiting additional households using maps of the area. House locations have been randomly selected for participation in two districts.
How long Will it take?
The study procedure will take about 30 minutes to complete. The procedure will include a questionnaire, and the collection of blood samples for lab testing for HIV and COVID-19. Participation is voluntary and you can withdraw at any time. All information will remain confidential.
How will the findings be used?
The learnings from the study will be shared with decision makers in government and the private sector to assist with the COVID-19 respons
Will I get R50 for taking part?
Yes, each person who takes part will get a R50 grocery voucher!
How can HUTS help you?
Each person who takes will be given a grocery store voucher worth R50 for being a part of this study. Those that take part in this study, will help us learn more about how some diseases affect different people, and how COVID-19 has affected people. We can then plan better how to protect people from diseases. We will also help people by testing them for HIV, they will be able to find out if they have the HIV virus. If they do, they can get doctors help and medicine. This can help them from getting more sick. They can also choose to find out if they have had COVID-19 when the results are ready in about two months’ time.
When will I see my antibody results from HUTS?
They can also choose to find out if they have had COVID-19 when the results are ready in about two months’ time.
