How To Test For A UTI

Around the world more than 100 million people worldwide are struggling with urinary tract infections (UTI) that keep coming back. These UTIs are incredibly uncomfortable. To stop this vicious cycle we need to change how we fight back against these infections. Just treating UTIs is not the answer. By using broad spectrum antibiotics to treat UTIs we’re often causing more problems than we’re solving.

What Is A UTI?

A urinary tract infection (UTI) also known as bladder infections or urinary bladder infections is an infection in any part of the urinary system, which includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Infections typically affect the lower urinary tract, primarily the bladder and urethra (Mayo Clinic, 2022).

Different Types of UTIs

Not all UTIs are the same. UTIs can be an ‘asymptomatic bacteriuria’ or ASB where the bacteria is present in the urine but the person is not experiencing any symptoms. In older women, ASB is often temporary, usually resolves without treatment, and does not contribute to complications or mortality. Whilst a symptomatic UTI is when it has been diagnosed by both clinical symptoms and laboratory evidence (Mody, 2016).

Recent studies have highlighted that chronic UTIs are a common problem in both elderly men and women (Mody, 2016). A recurrent urinary tract infection (rUTI) is defined as experiencing two or more UTIs in six months or three or more in a year, and affects more than 100 million people worldwide annually (Newland et al., 2024).

Why is Testing for UTI’s Important?

If you don’t know which bacteria you are treating there’s a good chance you might be using the wrong treatment. With the wrong treatment you can develop chronic UTIs, complications, hospitalizations and severe cases even death. UTIs are serious and should be treated as such.

When you get a UTI PCR test with Epicentre we will tell you exactly which bacteria you have and which UTI treatment you need to be on. This changes the game for acute and chronic UTI infections. Many UTIs are resistant against broad spectrum antibiotics and need specific antibiotics without a test you can’t know which bacteria you are dealing with.

What Epicentre’s UTI Testing Looks At:

Epicentre’s bladder infection testing or UTI testing looks at the top causes of UTIs according to scientific evidence including (Floreles, 2015):

Bacterial Causes of UTIs:

  • Escherichia coli (E. coli) – The most common cause of UTIs.
  • Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) – Often found in complicated UTIs.
  • Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) – Can lead to severe infections, especially in hospitalized patients.
  • Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Strep, GBS) – Can cause UTIs, particularly in pregnant women (Floreles, 2015).

Fungal Causes of UTIs (Candiduria):

  • Candida albicans (C. albicans) – The most common fungal cause of UTIs.
  • Other Candida species: C. dubliniensis, C. glabrata, C. krusei, C. lusitaniae, C. parapsilosis, C. tropicalis – These may cause fungal UTIs, particularly in immunocompromised patients

How To Use Epicentre’s UTI Testing To Treat Bladder Infections

  1. If You Experience Symptoms, Early testing can prevent worsening infections. Common UTI symptoms include:
  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Burning sensation during urination
  • Cloudy, strong-smelling, or bloody urine
  • Lower abdominal or back pain
  • Fever or chills (in severe cases)
  1. If You Have Recurrent UTIs Frequent infections may indicate an underlying issue that requires comprehensive testing.
  2. Before Starting Antibiotics Accurate diagnosis ensures that the right bacteria are targeted for treatment, reducing antibiotic resistance risks (Geerlings et al., 2016).
  3. If You Have a High-Risk Condition People with diabetes, pregnancy, or weakened immune systems should get tested early for proper management (Aggarwal et al., 2025).

Preventative Tips for Urinary Tract Infections

  1. Stay Hydrated
  • Drink plenty of water to flush out bacteria from your urinary tract (Mayo Clinic, 2022).
  1. Don’t Hold in Urine
  • Urinate frequently to prevent bacteria from multiplying in the bladder.
  • Always empty your bladder completely (Mayo Clinic, 2022).
  1. Practice Good Hygiene
  • Wipe front to back after using the toilet to prevent bacteria from spreading.
  • Wash your genital area before and after sex.
  1. Wear Breathable Clothing
  • Opt for cotton underwear and avoid tight-fitting pants to reduce moisture buildup.
  1. Maintain a Healthy Diet
  • Include cranberries or cranberry supplements, as they may help prevent bacteria from sticking to the bladder wall.
  • Eat probiotic-rich foods (like yogurt) to support a healthy microbiome.
  1. Avoid Irritants
  • Reduce caffeine, alcohol, and sugary drinks, which can irritate the bladder.
  • Avoid scented feminine hygiene products that may disrupt the natural balance.
  1. Urinate After Sexual Activity
  • Helps flush out any bacteria that may have entered the urethra.
  1. Get Regular Checkups
  • If you experience frequent UTIs, consult a healthcare provider for further testing and prevention strategies (Mayo Clinic, 2022).
