What does the screen cover?
Seventeen targets by PCR, in three groups, from a vaginal swab and a urine sample.
Beyond the standard STIs. This screen adds the bacteria linked to bacterial vaginosis and the organisms that shape vaginal balance, so symptoms can be understood rather than guessed at.
Sexually transmitted infections
Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Trichomonas vaginalis, Mycoplasma genitalium, HSV, HPV.
Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomonas, Mycoplasma genitalium, herpes and HPV.
BV-associated bacteria
Gardnerella vaginalis, Atopobium vaginae, BVAB2, Mobiluncus spp, Prevotella bivia, Megasphaera spp.
The bacteria linked to bacterial vaginosis and an imbalanced vaginal microbiome.
Balance and other organisms
Candida spp, Lactobacillus spp, Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma urealyticum, E. coli O18.

Results in 5 to 7 working daysPrivate from start to finish. The kit arrives in a plain Courier Guy bag. Want a plain box with no label as well? Tick “Plain box, no label” at checkout. Your bank statement shows only “Epicentre”.
How to take your sample at home
It takes about five minutes: the swab, then a urine sample. The instruction sheet in your box shows every step with pictures.
Before you start: don’t pee for at least 1 hour before you collect, and wash your hands before and after.
The vaginal swab
- Take the swab out of its tube. Don’t touch the soft tip.
- Insert the swab into your vagina.
- Gently rotate it clockwise for 10 to 30 seconds.
- Put it back in the tube and close the lid firmly. Wash your hands.
The urine sample
- Wash your hands and open the jar, ideally next to the toilet.
- Clean yourself with toilet paper. If you have a vulva, wipe from front to back.
- Start peeing into the toilet, then fill the jar halfway from the middle of the stream.
- Close the lid firmly, then stretch the seal strip tightly around the lid so it can’t leak.

- Sign the formRead the information sheet, sign the consent form and put it back in the box.

What this test does not do
- HIV, hepatitis B and the standard syphilis test are blood tests, so they are not in this screen. Add all three at a branch for R524.
- Some organisms on this panel can be present without causing problems. Finding one does not always mean you need treatment.
- If you have severe pain, a fever or feel very unwell, see a doctor or go to an emergency unit now rather than waiting for results.
- Your report is a starting point for a conversation with your doctor. Epicentre does not diagnose, treat or prescribe.
