At Epicentre, we’re proud to offer inclusive, discreet, and accurate sexual health testing for all people, no matter how they identify. But we also understand that navigating sexual health services can be challenging—especially for LGBTQIA+ individuals—because healthcare systems have too often failed to consider identity, dignity, and diversity.
So let’s talk about it—because your health matters, and your identity is valid.
💬 Understanding the Difference Between Sex and Gender Identity
One of the most common concerns we hear is confusion around how testing is determined—especially for trans, non-binary, or gender-diverse individuals. At Epicentre, we want to be clear:
🧬 Sexual health testing is based on anatomy and risk, not on gender identity.
This means that even if you identify as a different gender from the one you were assigned at birth, your testing needs may still relate to the parts of your body that could be exposed to STIs.
This does not invalidate your gender identity—we respect who you are. But biologically, the way an infection behaves in the body depends on where it can live and grow. For example, someone with a cervix may need a different kind of test than someone with a penis, regardless of their gender identity.
As Kessler et al. (2020) note, accurate STI screening must consider both current anatomy and sexual behaviour—including types of sex, number of partners, and use of protection. That’s why at Epicentre, we never assume. Our self-testing process is private, personalised, and respectful, built to meet your needs without awkward questions or assumptions.
🏳️🌈 Dignity vs Diagnosis: Why Inclusivity in Sexual Health Care Matters
Research shows that LGBTQIA+ individuals are less likely to access sexual health services, not because they care less—but because of how they’re treated when they do.
A recent study by Hoskin, Blair, and Jenson (2016) found that while heterosexual cisgender patients were most concerned about receiving a scary diagnosis, LGBTQIA+ individuals were more worried about being disrespected, misgendered, or misunderstood during their exam
. One trans participant even said they avoided testing because they “didn’t want someone poking around in the parts [they] feel [they] shouldn’t have.” This is a powerful reminder that dignity must come before diagnosis.
At Epicentre, we’ve heard these concerns—and we’re changing the experience.
🔬 How Epicentre’s Testing Works
Our Sexual Health Self-Test Kits are:
– PCR-based, which means they detect the DNA of infections like chlamydia, gonorrhoea, herpes, HPV, syphilis, trichomonas, and more.
– Highly accurate, even in early infections.
– Discreet and non-invasive—just a urine sample or swab, no blood or clinic visits needed.
– Delivered confidentially, with clear, secure results emailed to you.
– Referral-supported, so if you test positive, we’ll connect you with a local, affirming healthcare provider.
We offer test packages for female and male anatomy, but we also work with you to select the right test based on your body and behaviour, not outdated checkboxes. Plus, we never ask you to defend your identity.
💡 Why This Matters for Students and Young People
Young people between 15–24 account for half of all new STIs globally, according to the CDC. Many infections are asymptomatic, meaning you could have an STI and not know it. That’s why regular testing is so important.
But as Hoskin et al. (2016) highlight, barriers like fear, embarrassment, and past discrimination stop many LGBTQIA+ students from seeking help. Epicentre is here to break those barriers—by making testing:
1. Accessible (we offer student discounts through Varsity Vibe and Payflex split payments)
2. Private (collect samples at home, no clinic visit required)
3. Judgment-free (we’re trained in LGBTQIA+ inclusive care)
✨ Your Health, Your Identity, Your Terms
Sexual health is a human right—and no one should feel ashamed to care for theirs.
At Epicentre, we’ve worked hard to create a space where you can feel safe, seen, and supported. Whether you’re cis, trans, non-binary, queer, or questioning, your health journey deserves respect.
🧡 You are more than your body.
🩺 But your body still deserves care.
Let’s make sexual health testing easier, safer, and more inclusive—together.
